What is open-cell spray polyurethane foam, and how it can be used.
Open cell spray foam insulation is a form of spray foam insulation that has a lower density than its counterpart; closed-cell spray foam. Due to less materials being needed, open-cell spray foam insulation is applied quicker and is therefore less expensive to install than closed-cell. Furthermore, due to its lower density, open-cell spray foam insulation can accommodate long-term and seasonal house movement, reducing the risk of re-installation and insulation damage in the future.
Open-cell insulation foam is composed of many air bubbles held within a polyurethane matrix. It is these trapped air bubbles that lessen the transfer of heat through the foam. Applied through a spray nozzle to an open wall cavity, open foam insulation quickly expands to fill the space. It adheres to anything it touches, making it idea for irregular wall shapes.
It has an average R value of 3.5 per inch, so it does not match the insulating capabilities of closed-cell foam, but it still has useful applications. Open-cell insulation foam does not block vapor but instead allows it to pass through the foam, meaning it is particularly effective in hot climates where loads are primarily cooling. It is also cheaper than closed-cell foam, and less dense. When installed in wall cavities, the foam may overfill the cavity with the excess later trimmed away.

Open-cell spray foam is a lightweight, flexible insulation material that expands significantly upon application, filling gaps and cracks to create an air-sealing barrier. It is ideal for walls, attics, and ceilings in residential and commercial buildings.
Open-cell foam is softer, more flexible, and has a lower density, making it great for soundproofing and indoor insulation.
Closed-cell foam is denser, rigid, and provides a higher R-value per inch, making it better for moisture control and structural reinforcement.
