Quonset Office Conversion: The Project

Converting a cold and drafty quonset hut into a comfortable office space.

This project came to us from a client who was converting a quonset hut into an office space. Quonset huts are composed of galvanized steel on a wooden or metal frame; so no insulation to speak of.

How It Was Done

We started by applying a 3 inch layer of closed cell spray foam, bringing the buildings R value up to 21. This layer provides a thermal protection, keeping the heat out in the summer months, and in during the winter. It also provides a great acoustic barrier, so that outside noise won't be an issue for the office staff.

The final step was to apply a custom colored thermal barrier, which provides fire protection, and is often required in commercial buildings.

Businesses are beginning to realize that they don't their offices to be in a skyscraper in the business district. Converting the likes of old warehouses, quonset huts and shipping containers to office space is a trend that's only picking up pace. It can be a huge saving for companies to move to this kind of space.
