What Actually Costs You Money in an Oregon Building

A long, damp heating season. Western Oregon runs wet and cool from October through May. A building that leaks air is expensive to heat for eight months of the year, and the damp gets into crawl spaces and stays there.

Air movement, not just R-value. Fibreglass batts slow heat transfer but do almost nothing about air moving past them through top plates, can lights, the attic hatch and the rim joist. That is why a house with thick attic insulation can still be cold and costly.

Summers that now matter. Valley and southern Oregon summers have become hot enough that an unsealed attic turns into the hottest part of the house, and cooling load stops being an afterthought.

Spray Foam Insulation FAQ

Is spray foam worth it in Oregon?

In most Oregon buildings the gain comes from air sealing rather than raw R-value. Western Oregon has a long, damp heating season, and a building that leaks air is expensive to heat and slow to dry out. Spray foam seals and insulates in one application, which is why it outperforms batts in older housing stock.

Open-cell or closed-cell for an Oregon building?

Closed-cell has the higher R-value per inch and doubles as a moisture barrier, which suits crawl spaces, rim joists, roof decks and metal buildings. Open-cell costs less per board foot and seals air just as well, which often suits interior walls and ceilings where sound matters more than moisture. We assess the building before recommending either.

Can spray foam fix a damp crawl space?

Often, yes. Vented crawl spaces were designed on the assumption that vents dry the space out. In much of Oregon, and especially on the coast, those vents let in air that is already saturated, which then condenses on cooler surfaces underneath the house. Sealing and insulating the crawl space changes how the space behaves rather than treating the symptom.
